DOUBLE-DUTY PAYS OFF FOR CHRIS SPIEKER WITH
NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP

Iowa driver races his way to division title and $25,000 in post-season awards

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 20, 2005) – Racing twice a week at two different NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race tracks is nothing new for Chris Spieker. In addition to competing on Saturdays at Adams County Speedway, where he won three consecutive track championships (2003-2005) – Spieker has been racing on Sundays at I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park, where he finished either first or second in the final track standings the same three years.

Racing at both tracks paid off in a big way this season for the 35-year-old Massena, Iowa, driver with the 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division II championship and a $25,000 bonus.

Under the point system instituted in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series this year, divisional point standings were calculated using each driver’s best results from any races held at tracks within their division. Adams County Speedway, located in Corning, Iowa, and I-80 Speedway, in Greenwood, Neb., are both in Division II. Consequently, drivers were able to race at both tracks and accumulate points towards the Division II title.

The new program allows that each driver’s best 16 finishes are used to determine their point total towards the divisional title. In addition, bonus points were awarded based on the number of cars in a given race. For each event with 15-20 cars in the field, each driver received 10 bonus points; 20 bonus points were awarded for events with 21 or more cars.

Racing in the Late Model class on the half-mile dirt oval at Adams County Speedway and in the Super Late Model class on the 4/10-mile dirt oval at I-80 Speedway, Spieker was able to accumulate a combined record of 36 starts, 14 wins and 29 top-five finishes. Spieker’s best 16 finishes netted him 1,088 points and the Division II title.

Although Spieker led the Division II point standings throughout the season, the championship came down to the final weekend of racing as he battled two former NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national champions, brothers Joe and Ed Kosiski.

Spieker and the other three NDWS divisional winners will be honored at the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series awards banquet, scheduled for Nov. 5 in Nashville.

PEYTON SELLERS WINS NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

South Boston Speedway driver becomes NASCAR’s youngest national champion

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 20, 2005) – At age 21, Peyton Sellers has achieved a major milestone in his auto racing career by winning one of NASCAR’s most prestigious annual titles. Sellers, of Danville, Va., won the 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national championship after a winning season in Late Model Stock Cars at South Boston (Va.) Speedway and other area tracks.

Sellers claimed the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division I championship by recording the highest point total, based on his best 16 finishes of the year, in Division I. For this honor, Sellers will receive a $25,000 bonus from NASCAR and Dodge. Sellers’ point total (1,114) was also the highest among the four NDWS divisional champions, giving him the national crown and an additional $50,000 award – for a total of $75,000 in post-season prize money.

Sellers will be honored at the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series awards banquet, scheduled for Nov. 5 in Nashville. The gala event, one of NASCAR’s largest post-season functions, will be a triumphant return to Nashville for Sellers. His father, Bert Sellers, was a crew member for 1988 NASCAR Busch Series champion Tommy Ellis, who was honored in a similar affair in Nashville. Then-five-year-old Sellers attended the event and now, 17 years later, he takes center stage.

“At an early age, when I started racing go karts, I remember going to Nashville,” Sellers said. “To come back as a champion feels pretty good.

“Really, this was a breakout season for us. We won one 200-lapper last year. We got to the point where we could be a good top-five contender every week, everywhere we went. For whatever reason –  my experience level, my ability to work with my crew chief, H.C., who is my brother – we just couldn’t put a lot of wins on the board.”

Sellers’ family-run team stuck with their program in 2005 and scored big under NASCAR’s new points format.

“This year, we’ve had the same equipment and the same sponsors have stuck with us,” Sellers said. “Now, we’re able to give them a little bit more. The chemistry that’s there is a little better and things have been going smoother this year.”

Overall, Sellers recorded 15 wins and 20 top-five finishes in 28 races this season – including 12 wins at his home track in South Boston. His best 16 finishes netted him 1,114 points towards the Division I and national titles.

Sellers is the youngest national champion in series history, surpassing the age mark set by then-23-year-old Robert Powell in 1988. He is also the second Virginia driver to win the title in the past three years. Mark McFarland, a native of Winchester, Va. who is scheduled to race full-time in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2006, was the Commonwealth’s first national champion in 2003.

The talented young star began his driving career at the age of seven, in go karts. By age 13, Sellers was racing in open wheel mini sprints and he moved up to Super Stocks, at South Boston, at age 15. By 2004, at the age of 20, Sellers had advanced to Late Model Stock Cars and had also made his debut in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) RE/MAX Series. Sellers finished fifth in the track championship point standings at South Boston in 2004.

This season, under NASCAR’s re-vamped format for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Sellers was able to branch out and compete at other tracks in Division I. Drivers could collect points towards their divisional title by racing at other tracks in their Division. Sellers’ occasional trips to Motor Mile Speedway, in Radford, Va., and Caraway Speedway, in Asheboro, N.C., helped him pad his points lead and win the title.

In addition to his racing career, Sellers graduated from Danville Community College in 2004 and currently attends Averett University in Danville, where he studies business management. Sellers also works as a heavy equipment operator for his family’s business, Sellers Brothers Inc., and is an active member of the Ringgold Baptist Church.

TITLE BATTLE BREWS AMONG MIDWESTERN DRIVERS IN DIVISION II OF NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 30, 2005) – A battle continues to brew among several Midwestern drivers as they pursue the $25,000 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division II championship.

Mike Hansen of Alton, Iowa, moved to second in the point standings this week and closed to within 38 markers of Chris Spieker of Massena, Iowa – with three weeks remaining before the NASCAR season concludes on Sept. 18.

Spieker – who has led the NDWS Division II standings all season – finished fourth at Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, on Saturday. He leads the division with 1,078 points. Hansen has 1,040 points – after finishing sixth at Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D., on Saturday.

Slipping to third in the standings this week with 1,034 points is Joe Kosiski of Omaha, Neb. Inclement weather left the former national champion and his fellow competitors idle at I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb., on Sunday.

Retaining fourth in the division this week with 1,010 points is Jeff Strunk of Bethel, Pa. Strunk finished second at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Penn., on Saturday.

Drivers in nearly every position behind him swapped positions this week in the NDWS Division II point standings, meanwhile. Scott Bonney of North Chelmsford, Mass., moved up three spots to fifth – with 854 points. Pete Anderson Jr., of Stockton, Calif., is sixth with 838 points – followed by Eric Richardson of Bakersfield, Calif., with 822. Moving up one position to eighth in the standings is Stacey Gerken of LaGrange, Ohio, with 800 points. Robert Barker of Boerne, Texas, also gained a spot – moving to ninth with 782 points. Travis Sharpe of North, S.C., is 10th in the division with 772 points.

Under NASCAR’s new points format for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, a driver’s best 16 finishes are counted towards the divisional title. If a driver races more than 16 times, their poorer finishes are not counted in the NDWS point standings. Four drivers will win a Division championship, which includes a $25,000 bonus and a chance at the $50,000 national championship bonus. One of the divisional champions – the champion with the highest point total overall – wins the national award.

KOSISKI, HANSEN GAIN ON SPIEKER AS THEY CHASE TITLE
IN DIVISION II OF NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 16, 2005) – It appears the race for the championship in Division II of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series will go down to the wire, as Joe Kosiski and Mike Hansen slowly close in on points leader Chris Spieker with five weeks remaining before the NASCAR season concludes on Sept. 18.

Kosiski closed to within 50 points of the leader this week, while Hansen edged to within 78 points of the top spot – as they chase the division title and its $25,000 bonus.

Spieker of Massena, Iowa, accumulated a big points lead early this year – competing at his home track of Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, on Saturdays and I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb., on Sundays. NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Divisional point standings are calculated using each driver’s best results from any races held at tracks within their division. Adams County Speedway and I-80 Speedway are both in Division II – meaning drivers can race at both tracks and accumulate points towards the title.

Spieker leads Division II with 1,072 points. Although Adams County Speedway cancelled their event this past weekend, Spieker was able to add to his points total with a fourth-place finish at I-80 Speedway on Sunday.

Kosiski, a former NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national champion from Omaha, Neb., finished second in that event. He trails Spieker with 1,022 points.

Hansen was not as fortunate, however. Problems left the Alton, Iowa, driver with a 19th-place finish at Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D. Nevertheless, he is third in the division point standings with 994 points.

Making a strong run from fourth in the standings is Jeff Strunk of Bethel, Pa., with 942 points. He charged from 18th on the grid to score his fourth win of the year at Grandview Speedway, in Bechtelsville, Pa., on Saturday.

Eric Richardson of Bakersfield, Calif., is fifth in Division II with 822 points.

Completing the top 10 of the standings are Gerry Bergeron of Candiac, Quebec.; John Moore of Granite Bay, Calif.; Travis Sharpe of North, S.C.; Stacey Gerken of LaGrange, Ohio; and Robert Barker of Boerne, Texas.

Under NASCAR’s new points format for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, a driver’s best 16 finishes are counted towards the divisional title. If a driver races more than 16 times, their poorer finishes are not counted in the NDWS point standings.

MIKE HANSEN GAINS GROUND ON LEADERS IN DIVISION II OF NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 9, 2005) – Fueled by a win on his home track, Mike Hansen gained ground this week on the leaders in Division II of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series.

The win was Hansen’s third victory of the season in the NASCAR Modified class at Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D. The Alton, Iowa, driver closed to within 110 points of the lead – while remaining third in the point standings for the division.

Chris Spieker, of Massena, Iowa, remains atop the standings for the 15th consecutive week. He has 1,070 points – after finishing fifth on his home track of Adams County Speedway on Saturday and taking home a runner-up finish at I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb., on Sunday.

Joe Kosiski of Omaha, Neb., continues to shadow Spieker in the standings – trailing by 72 markers with 998 points. The former national champion was credited with a 22nd-place finish at I-80 Speedway on Sunday, after dropping out of competition with mechanical trouble.

CHRIS SPIEKER SIZZLES IN DIVISION II OF NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 2, 2005) – Just as the summer sun has been scorching the Great Plains, Chris Spieker continues to sizzle on dirt tracks in Iowa and Nebraska. The Massena, Iowa, driver continues to lead Division II of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, as he ran his point total to 1,062 this week.

Spieker finished third at his home track of Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, on Saturday – then collected a second-place finish at I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb., on Sunday. NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Divisional point standings are calculated using each driver’s best results from any races held at tracks within their division. Adams County Speedway and I-80 Speedway are both in Division II – meaning Spieker can race at both tracks and accumulate points towards the NDWS Division II title.

Under NASCAR’s new points format for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, a driver’s best 16 finishes are counted towards the divisional title. If a driver races more than 16 times, their worst points finishes are not counted in the NDWS point standings. Spieker’s stats actually reflect one less win this week than a week before. Because of the bonus points he received for a larger car count in one of last weekend’s races, he gained more points for that event than he did for one of his previous wins. Consequently, he gained more points, despite losing a win from his record.

Although Spieker has led the division all season, he still faces some stiff competition. Former NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national champion Joe Kosiski, of Omaha, Neb., edged closer to the top spot after scoring his third win of the season on Sunday at I-80 Speedway. Kosiski is just 64 markers back with 998 points.

Mike Hansen, of Alton, Iowa, remains in the NDWS Division II title hunt with 890 points. He finished ninth at Park Jefferson Speedway, in Jefferson, S.D., on Saturday. Jeff Strunk, of Bethel, Pa., remains fourth in the standings this week with 810.

Jonathan Bouvrette, of St. Therese, Quebec, continued his climb in the standings, meanwhile, moving up two positions this week to fifth with 770 points. He added to his record with two top-five finishes over the weekend at Autodrome St. Eustache in Quebec.

Two top 10 drivers whose classes were idle over the weekend, meanwhile, were sixth-place Eric Richardson, of Bakersfield, Calif., and seventh-place Travis Sharpe, of North, S.C.

John Moore, of Granite Bay, Calif., bounced back into the top 10 this week – after finishing fourth at Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway on Saturday. He is followed in the standings by Stacey Gerken, of LaGrange, Ohio, who had a top-five finish at Lorain Speedway on Saturday; and Robert Barker, of Boerne, Texas, who scored his seventh win of the season in a 40-lap late model feature race at San Antonio Speedway on Saturday.

SPIEKER PILES ON THE POINTS IN DIVISION II OF NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 26, 2005) Chris Spieker continued to pile up points this week in his quest to win this year’s championship in Division II of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series. The Massena, Iowa, Dirt Late Model driver has topped the standings nearly all season and leads the way this week with 1,048 points.

Spieker scored a win at his home track of Adams County Speedway on Saturday and then added to that with a runner-up finish at I-80 Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb., on Sunday. NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Divisional point standings are calculated using each driver’s best 16 finishes from any races held at tracks within their division. Adams County Speedway and I-80 Speedway are both in Division II – meaning drivers can race at both tracks and accumulate points towards the title.

Joe Kosiski, of Omaha, Neb., remains second in the standings – 78 markers back – with 970 points. He finished fourth at I-80 Speedway on Sunday. Mike Hansen, of Alton, Iowa, solidified his third-place standing in Division II by winning a NASCAR Modified 20-lap feature at Park Jefferson Speedway on Saturday. With the victory, he boosted his point total to 836.
