Stockton 99 2000 Schedule offers a new look
(Stockton-1/21/00) Variety is the spice of Stockton 99 Speedways racing schedule for
2000, which recently was released. And the news should be as popular with area racing fans
as the rumbling if uncorked headers and the fresh scent of burning rubber. To note:
- There will be eight 100-lap races involving the late Model Sportsman division, including
the Tri-Holiday Classic on May 27, July 1 and Sept. 2. The Tri-Track Challenge resumes but
has been scaled back from 12 races to 10. Stockton 99 will be host to 4 Tri-Track events,
the other two tracks only having 3 each. Track Manager Duane Borovec said because one of
the tracks is running Late Models as its premier division, it didnt want the extra
100-lappers. "We were happy to accommodate," Borovec said. Stockton 99 will also
offer a stand alone prize fund for the Late Model class, "like there is for the
Tri-Track, according to Borovec, as an attraction to Late Model drivers to run in
Stockton.
- There will be two 100-lappers in Grand American Modified, which remains the premier
division at the track. Included is a blockbuster card July 3rd, with the USAC Midgets and
Sprints in attendance. The other 100-lapper will be an open comp show Sept. 30.
- The Street Stock class has been upgraded to Pro Stock. "We tried to make it a more
attractive division so the Pure Stock people can move up.," Borovec said. "We
cut the cost a little and made it an incentive by offering a bigger purse to the Pro Stock
class." Pro Stock winners will receive $200.00. Speaking of Pure Stock, there now are
more than 70 entries in the class.
- There are four Ultra Wheel Spec Truck events on the schedule, including a statewide
event that will draw drivers from Southern California, and three USAC appearances. The
first will be the Bud Light All-Star Open Wheel Classic for sprint, Midget and Super
Modified cars March 26, the same day the GAM runs its first points race.
- Finally, there will be six appearances by the Legends, three programs with fireworks,
the annual Powder Puff race for ladies Sept. 30 and a 250 lap enduro and roll-over contest
Oct. 7 in the final show of the season.
- Ticket prices remain the same as in 1999.
- Mark Welch of Orangevale was named 1999 oval track driver of the year for stock cars by
the Motor Sports Press Association. Welch won the Grand American Modified track
Championship at Stockton 99 Speedway and the NASCAR Pacific Coast Regional Title.
