STOCKTON - Pete Anderson Jr. said he could barely stand up when he got out of his race car.

But despite feeling ill, he was still able to do his job while he was sitting behind the steering wheel.

Anderson battled a nasty case of the flu and a determined Pete Hernandez and secured his second win of the season in the eighth leg of the NASCAR Western Late Model Hotwood 1,000 Saturday at Stockton 99 Speedway.

"I'm pretty sick, and I really felt it in the last 30 laps or so," Anderson said. "I can barely stand up, but it feels really good to get this win. We really needed it."

Anderson said he began to get sick on Tuesday , and had a fever most of the week. But there was no way he wasn't showing up after recently losing his points lead in the WLM regular season and Hotwood standings.

"We did fall back a bit, but we were confident that we had a good race car," Anderson said.

Anderson started on the outside of the first row next to Eric Humphries of Chowchilla and took the lead on the first lap. He would never trail, but Hernandez put a tremendous amount of pressure on him in the second half of the 100-lap race.

The final 62 laps of the event were run under green-flag conditions, and Hernandez spent most of the time just inches off of Anderson's back bumper.

But Hernandez could not get around him. He did pull even with Anderson with three laps to go, but Anderson quickly regained control.

"When I had a run, he had a run with me," Hernandez said. "It's a l00 lap race, and you just hope that it's there at the end. It was there, but we just couldn't get under him."

The NASCAR Southwest Series race was not finished at press time. Mark Henslee of Lathrop completed his second cleam sweep of the season by winning a time-shortenedPro 4 Truck main event. Henslee won for the sixth time this season, and he won the trophy dash and set the fast qualifying time at 15.335 seconds.

The race was scheduled for 25 laps, but Ed Figone of Stockton blew an engine on lap 20, and there was a lengthy delay. The drivers were informed that the race would go to lap 22 after the restart because of time constraints.

Chad Holman of Stockton secured his fourth victory of the season in the American Limited Stock Car race, which was also called early because of a time limit. The ALSC drivers raced 19 of the scheduled 30 laps.
