With the summer months upon us, and half the 2010 Season in the books, On Saturday, June 26th, the NASCAR Whelen All American Racing Series continued with the Western Late Models in Twin 25's, Grand American Modifieds, Street Stocks, Bombers, and Mini Cups. The Season is rolling along rather quickly, and the “Old Girl” has had her share of ups and downs as every track does. But, that certainly has not deterred the racing, from Local to Touring Divisions alike, as they all have produced some high-adrenalin, earth-pounding excitement to fill the bellies of even the hungriest of race fans in the stands.
The Chase for the Championship continued in the Western Late Model Division with Twin-25’s on tap for the evening in front of a crowd of nearly 1,000. After a dismal car-count last week, things picked up, but not much, with six cars taking the grid. The first Twin got underway with Points Leader Chad Holman (9) of Manteca inheriting the pole after setting fast time with no invert implemented. Trevor Schlundt (28) of Clovis started P2, and as the two paced the field to green, Schlundt nabbed the holeshot like a man on a mission as he drove off into the sunset, with field in tow, crossing beneath the checkers for his second win of the year. Holman, despite nibbling at Schlundt’s back bumper, was never able to overcome a loose race car and had to settle for second. Although positions one and two were pretty much foregone conclusions early on, the race for third was heated at times with seventeen year old Michael Sandoval (17) of Ripon winning out over the #57 of Manteca’s David Hulsey, who finished fourth. San Ramon’s Brian Koski (5) rounded out the top five.
In the second Twin, due to a full-field invert off the finishing order from the first Twin, Brian Koski (5) of San Ramon started on pole with David Hulsey (57) of Manteca flanking him to the right. Hulsey got a great jump as the green flag flew and moved into the lead until lap 3 when Points Leader Chad Holman (9) of Manteca dove below Hulsey coming off turn two and grabbed a huge hunk of forward bite which vaulted him to P1 where, once out front, he would run, virtually unmolested, to the checkers for his first-ever WLM win in a very convincing manner. “I didn’t expect to get such a great start from forth, but it played out really well for me,” said the quiet-mannered Holman, “I want to thank all my sponsors who allow me to do this and a special thanks to Pete Anderson Jr. for his help this week. They gave me a really good car tonight.” The war over P2 was waged throughout the twenty-five laps with no less than three cars vying for the position. But, when the dust settled, Hulsey would be the man standing on the podium in second. Michael Sandoval (17) of Ripon, after pressuring Hulsey ferociously all night, came up a bit short, but still managed the podium with a third place finish. Trevor Schlundt (28) of Clovis and Zack Huffman (55) of French Camp finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Grand American Modifieds roared back into action after a well-deserved week off and they were ready to rumble as only they can. Joey Licata (7a) of Lake Balboa alongside newly-married and Points Leader AJ Ryder (62) of Stockton took the green to get this one going with Licata enjoying the jump to the front where he would lead every lap, flag to flag, for the very impressive victory, his first-ever at Stockton. Although he shadowed Licata’s every move, Ryder could never mount a charge to the lead and he had to settle for what was most likely a very satisfying second place finish. This race did not go without its battles, but in the end, Mike Regelmen (55) of Lodi, would come home on the podium in third while the Pride of Piketon, Ohio, Arron Higgins (21a) finished her up in fourth. Ryan Stepps (98) of Concord, NC and six-time IMCA Champion at Lowes Motor Speedway, rounded out the top five.
If you love heart-pounding, adrenalin-pumping, hard-core racing, then the Street Stocks should fill the bill quite nicely. The one thing you can depend on from this Division: they always satisfy your racing thirst. This one got up to speed with Ben Lewis II (22) of Stockton and “Racin” Jason Aguirre (45) of Atwater bringing the field around to greet the green. At the drop of the flag, Aguirre took possession of that much-coveted real estate out front where, once there, he would prove to be all-consuming on this night as he chewed away at the asphalt until there was nothing left but the checkered flag and victory, his second of the Season. “It felt great to win tonight. We got a great starting spot, front row, outside,” said the well-spoken Aguirre, “We thought the #22 was going to be a problem, so we adjusted on the car all day. When the green flag finally dropped, we realized we were the ones to beat tonight.” Lewis would be the nearest thing to a competitor for Aguirre, but he still had to settle for second, although a comfortable second. Not to be under-played, the battle for third raged on for the duration with Jeff Ahl (31x) of Lodi finally deciding on the last lap third would be his to claim, and so he did, by a small margin over Livermore’s Mark Squadrito in the #3 machine. Robert Daniel, after a fierce fight for position with Stockton’s “Rompin” Rich Harper (5), rounded out the top five. Points Leader Sammy Solari (79) of Escalon, after battling an ill-handling car all night, finished up in sixth.
Stockton 99 Speedway’s Bombers are second to none when it comes to thrills and spills. This Division has blossomed to such great extent this year the competition and talent is seemingly unending. Newcomer Matt Wendt (2) of Lodi grabbed the pole by setting fast time earlier in the day with Rookie and second generation driver Robbie Knittel (003), also of Lodi, at his side. Wendt took advantage of his great starting spot immediately by jumping out front, but almost as immediate, the race was slowed on lap 2 as the yellow went flying when Jeremy Tucker (51) of Stockton went spinning coming off turn two. On the restart, Wendt resumed the lead, and by all accounts, did an absolutely stunning job navigating traffic to hold his position all the way through to the checkers for the wire to wire victory. This was Wendt’s second race of his young career. “It felt pretty good to win this one. I owe everything to my brother (Michael),” said the soft-spoken young Wendt, “He taught me how to drive the car. He taught me how to work on everything, so I owe everything to him for this win.” Knittel, after a tumultuous battle for the entire thirty laps with Stockton’s own Tom Dahl (004), pulled off a beautiful second place run. Dahl would have to settle for third with Fast Freddie Rathjen (290) of Stockton coming home fourth. First-timer Chevy Hackett (069) of Manteca debuted in fifth with a fantastic first run while Points Leader Travis Tucker (350) of Stockton just missed the top five, finishing sixth.
The Mini Cups Division is beginning to gain ground, and with it, the excitement intensifies each time these little guys hit the asphalt. Unfortunately, as the drivers followed the pace car around for the parade laps, the #57 of Manteca’s Landon Renolds suffered mechanical failure which brought an abrupt end to his night. When the green finally waved it would be a two-car shoot-out for fifteen laps with Points Leader Travis Affonso edging out Jerald Cronk (48) of Discovery Bay for the victory, his sixth on the Season.
