STOCKTON - Jeremy Doss didn't have the fastest qualifying time in the North State Challenge Series Late Model qualifying Saturday night at Stockton 99 Speedway.
It didn't matter.
The 15-year-old driver from Upper Lake blew away the field in the 75-lap main to take the checkered flag in front of an estimated 500 fans.
Doss led by more than half a lap ahead of Brandon White of Eureka, who eventually finished second, and Junior Roddy of Gualala in third. John Delerio of Ukiah won the trophy dash.
Alan Ryder of Stockton won the Grand American Modifieds main event ahead of T.J. Petroncelli of Sonoma. Andy Vanderveer of Santa Rosa won the dash.
Manteca's Chad Holman surprised himself, but maybe not the fans, as he earned his second consecutive Super Stocks victory in the two races he's competed in this season. He finished ahead by a one-car margin over Aaron Coonfield of Riverbank. Season points leader Jason Aguirre of Atwater cautiously took third ahead of Robbie Knittel of Lodi and Rich Harper of Stockton. Knittel and Harper are second and third in the season standings, respectively. Matt Wendt of Lodi won the Super Stocks dash.
"I hadn't even planned to race this year," said Holman, who won earlier this season on Kids Night after his son, Seth, asked his father to race the same night he raced in the Mini Cups event. "I really can't believe it. I dusted the car off and was surprised to win the first time."
Rodney Tripp of Stockton took advantage of a yellow restart on the sixth lap to take the lead in the Bomber main then held off the field for the checkered flag. Stockton's Peggy Sue Jared caught Oakdale's Tyler Guzman on the final turn of the 30-lap race to grab second, igniting an enthusiastic cheer from the spectators.
Bomber heat winners Brandon Jones of Lodi and Ben Lewis II of Stockton weren't so fortunate as they were knocked out of the main within the first five laps in a physical race that started with 17 vehicles. Lewis came away with the dash victory before his night ended, while Jones, the points leader, saw Tripp, Guzman and Stockton's Darin Adler jump back into title contention as the season enters the home stretch.
William Camera of Fremont won both the Star Modifieds main event and trophy dash. Camera finished a half car ahead of Nick Lyons of Loomis and Alan Ryder of Stockton for his first win of the year.
Joseph Reichmuth of Manteca started last in the B-4 main but passed Brad Mast of Manteca on lap 11 and cruised to his seventh win of the season ahead of Mast. Dave Kong of Stockton took the dash win.
The Speedway hosts the Tri-Holiday Classic series finale next week with the Financial Center Credit Union Western Late Model 100. Other races include the North State Challenge Series Modifieds in a 60-lap event, Star Modifieds 60, Pure Stocks 50, B-4 40 and Mini Cup 30.

Survival Of The Fittest Was The Theme Of
The Night At The Toughest Test In The
West
On Saturday, August 25th,
the
NASCAR Whelen All American Series
returned to action featuring the Airport
Auto Brokers Late Models (AABLM), Plus
Twin Grand American Modifieds and Star
Racing Supply Modifieds, Super Stocks,
Pure Stocks and Basically-4-Cylinders.
As the atmosphere cooled, so too, did
the hot asphalt surface. And with that
cooling came more grip, which, in turn,
called for faster speeds and better
racing. However, they do not call this
place the Toughest Test in the West for
nothing. Unfortunately, some drivers
have to find out the hard way. And so
it went, some absolutely great racing
took place in front of nearly 600 joyous
fans in the stands on this not-so-hot
summer night.
The Super Stock Division garnered
special favor from the Racing Gods,
which allowed them to roll out of the
blocks first on this night. The 2010
WLM Track Champion, “The Iceman” Chad
Holman (75) of Manteca, made his second
appearance of the year, and, for the
second time, he reaped the spoils of
glory in Victory Circle with a perfect
record of two for two on the Season.
This race called for a full-invert and
with three cars dropping to the back,
Stockton’s own “Rompin” Rich Harper (5)
inherited P1 Honors while “The Iceman”
Chad Holman (75) moved into the second
slot high and tight and already nibbling
numbers off the right side door of the
#5. With the green flag wrinkled
against a warm summer breeze, Holman got
to the gas an eighth inch sooner than
did Harper to grab the holeshot by a
nose going off into turn one.
Unfortunately, on lap 2, the race was
slowed almost as soon as it had gone
green when two cars made contact going
off into turn three and brought with
them the first caution of the night. On
the restart, Holman reclaimed that
much-coveted real estate out front where
he would turn back all near-challenges
until a lap 17 yellow slowed the action
once again. On the ensuing restart,
Holman assumed P1, but this time around
he brought company who came in the form
of Riverside’s Arron Coonfield (25).
Coonfield would proceed in nibbling and
gnawing at the back of the #75 over the
next thirteen circuits, but in the end,
the #25 simply ran out of time and laps
as Holman took it to the checkers for
his second win in as many starts. Of
course, Coonfield, still picking pieces
of rear bumper and spoiler from his
teeth, made one last effort coming off
four to the checkers, but finally had to
settle for an extremely close second
place run. Atwater’s “Racin” Jason
Aguirre (45), after leading early and
after battling Coonfield for that number
two spot throughout the thirty laps, had
to settle into third and that’s exactly
where he finished. Lodi’s Robbie “The
Kid” Knittel (03), after starting deep
on the grid, finished her up in fourth
while Harper fell off the pace, if only
slightly, but still managed a fifth
place run.
The Modified Twin #1 ushered in a new
face to the Winner’s Circle at the
Speedway on this night. Fremont’s
William Camara (20A) brought home the
gold for his first-ever win in a
Modified. And, he did it quite
convincingly, going flag to flag!
Another full-invert landed William
Camara (20A) on pole with Jessica Clark
(7) of Westlake Village flanking him to
the right to get this one underway. Of
course, as fate would have it, Camara
jumped out to the early lead, and,
despite having to endure only a single
yellow, he took heed in that wonderful,
breathable air out front where he
decided to follow his nose all the way
through to the checkers as he took it to
the house for the spectacular Victory,
his first-ever. And in doing so, sent a
loud message that reverberated
throughout the atmosphere and came to
rest in our receptive laps: William
Camara will have to be reckoned with in
the Division! Nick Lyons (43) of
Loomis, after starting shotgun on the
field, and being one of the players in
the ever-changing points battle, ran in
his usual solid style and landed on the
second tier of the podium. The 2010
Division Champion from Stockton, Alan
Ryder (62), ran a great race of his own
as he drove it onto the podium in
third. Menlo Park’s Nic Romano (4),
another deep starter and another player
for the points, came home with a fourth
place finish, while Stockton’s Andy
Vanderveer (49) rounded out the top
five.
Perhaps the Greatest Show On Earth, the
Pure Stocks rolled out with large
car-count and a well-known name leading
the field to Victory Lane. Stockton’s
Rodney Tripp (008), starting thirteen
cars deep on the grid, worked his way
magically through the pack to the
checkers for his third win of the year.
Stockton’s Joey Sarafin (80X) and the
young gun and second generation driver
from Ceres, Tyler Guzman (93X), got the
call to the front row where they paced
the field around to greet the green.
Guzman grabbed the early lead only to be
slowed immediately when, on lap 1, two
Stockton drivers, Ben Lewis II (22) and
Tom Dahl (004), made contact down the
backstretch with the #22 receiving the
worst in of the deal, which abruptly
ended his night. Lewis was checked at
the Infield Care Center and released.
His hotrod was not. On the restart,
Guzman darted out to take back what was
his at the time, and had begun to tiptoe
away when, on lap 6, the Racing God of
Loose Wheels pointed his wretched finger
at the #80 of Sarafin, and away went the
right rear, which was followed to the
stripe closely by first a yellow, then a
red. On the ensuing restart, and much
to Guzman’s chagrin, Rodney Tripp (008),
coming from P13 on the starting grid and
working his way mystically through to
P2, grabbed a huge hunk of forward bite
coming up off turn four to the green
which vaulted him out into that
wonderful, breathable air, where, once
there, the young driver from Stockton
began to chew away at the delicious
asphalt until there was absolutely
nothing left in his wake but his distant
past, while his future of guts and glory
await in Victory Lane. And, speaking of
that distant past, the battle for second
place was a tumultuous one between
Guzman and Manteca’s Peggy Sue Jared
(313), which, by way of undoubting
tenacity, Jared made a spectacular move
through three and four on the final lap
to beat out the young Guzman at the
stripe for second. Of course, Guzman
would finish on the podium in third. At
first sight, one would have thought
Stockton’s Darin Alder (360) had
finished up in fourth, but upon further
review, the fickle finger from the
Racing God of Too Much Creative
Engineering pointed directly at Alder,
which ended his night in grief.
Everyone behind the #360 moved up a spot
which put two Stockton drivers next in
line: Roy Luft (021) and, after the
early race altercation, and after being
absent from racing for quite some time,
Tom Dahl were credited with fourth and
fifth, respectively.
In the B-4’s, no big surprise here as
2011 Champ and current Points Leader
from Manteca, Joseph Reichmuth (6),
continued his domination of the Division
by winning number seven on the Season.
Starting shotgun on the grid, Reichmuth
worked his way to the point by lap 11,
getting by Stockton’s Brad Mast (69),
who had held point over the first ten
laps. Once Reichmuth tasted that
rarified air, he put it into another
gear and rode it out to the checkers for
the win. Mast shadowed every move put
on by the #6, but he never really
challenged for the lead after that and
had to settle for second. Modesto’s
Nick Moore (23) had a fabulous run of
his own as he drove his machine onto the
podium in third. Stockton’s Justin
Terry (11X) ran a solid fourth while
Modesto’s Jennifer Corder (24) rounded
out the top five.
Modified #2 brought with it a change-up
in line-up and an old, familiar face to
the forefront. And, that face came in
the form of Stockton’s 2010 Division
Champion, AJ Ryder (62), as he
maneuvered his way through some close
calls and finished on the top tier of
the podium for his first win of the
year. Sonoma’s PJ Pedroncelli (0),
after suffering difficulties in Twin #1,
started P1 in this one and hung around
the top of the food chain all race long
to finish in a solid second. Menlo
Park’s Nik Romano (4) enjoyed another
great night of racing and backed it up
with a podium finish in third. Nick
Lyons (43) of Loomis closed the books on
this night with yet another great run in
fourth while Stockton’s Andy Vanderveer
(49) walked away with a pair fifth place
runs to end a very successful night.
In the Airport Auto Brokers Late Models
(AABLM), the 15 year old phenom from
Upper Lake, Jeremy Doss (75), completely
dominated this 75 lap romp to the glory
land by taking the lead early on and
driving. mostly unchallenged, to the
checkers for the impressive Victory.
Cloverdale’s Jeremy Donahue (05) nabbed
pole honors while another driver from
Cloverdale, Clay Caturegli (55), took up
temporary residence high and outside,
but moved to the back, which put Ukiah’s
John Dalerio (14) to the front. At the
drop of the green, Dalerio grabbed a
gear and beat the field off into turn
one for the early lead where he would
enjoy his six laps of racing pleasure in
the spotlight. However, on lap 7, after
starting mid-pack on the grid, Jeremy
Doss (75) found something in his car
that eluded the rest of the field as he
drove by Dalerio and into the lead with
much self-assuredness. Once out on that
much-sought-after territory, Doss seemed
to stick it in overdrive as he began to
step away from his nearest competitor in
his powerful clinic of how to get around
this tricky quarter-mile and he took it
all the way through to the checkers for
the Victory. Ukiah’s Keith Nelson (6),
hanging around the front all night long,
drove an absolutely brilliant race of
his own, which put him high on the
podium in second. Gualala’s Junior
Roddy (41), after setting a New Track
Record earlier in the day and starting
last row on the grid, worked his way
meticulously through the field and drove
it onto the podium in third. Eureka’s
Brandon White (99) seemed to love the
low groove through turn’s three and four
and astonishingly enough, he made it
work by finishing up in fourth. Upper
Lake’s Forrest Kuecker (79), after
starting deep on the grid, made his way
up to a fifth place finish.
