thank you

Sir, thank you for buying and re-opening the track. I have been in the military since June of 2004 and always looked forward to coming home and seeing races while on leave. I used to go to the track since I can remember, and I even got to be on my uncle Buzz Devor’s race team for a couple of years before I enlisted. Again thank you for getting the track back up and running. I look forward to bringing my new son to the track, and continuing the generations Saturday night fun.

To whom it may concern,
My name is Matt Roberts, I graduated from Wyotech in 2007 with honors.  After graduation I accepted a job with Campbell Auto Restoration where I helped build people's dreams for a year until the economy forced my boss to let me go.  Since I have have held a couple of jobs but was laid off again.  I have a passion for racing and building cars that can go faster then every one else.  You maybe wondering why I tell you this, I tell you because I want to ask you a favor.  Do you know any shops in the area that is looking for an extra hand, I have a good work ethic and learn quickly.  I ask you please help out a veteran in a time of need.  I thank you for your time and will see you Saturday night.

 Respectfully,

Hi Tony,
I just wanted to take a minute to send thanks to you and all the wonderful people at Stockton 99 Speedway, for helping my nephew Adam Coonfield, get a car back out onto the track. Being over here in Iraq, news is very slow for me.
I am going to be helping as well to make sure that he has a safe race car once again in my absence.
It really makes my heart feel good to know that there are still some good people left out there.
God Bless you all and

Program of 5-30-09

Carol and Tony:
First thing I would like to commend you guys and your crew for bringing back 99.  A monumental task at best, and you have met the challenge.  The new look, concessions, announcing has all been an improvement.

Secondly, I am glad that you have made the moves necessary to eliminate, or seriously hamper favoritism that was taking place at the first of the season.

Thirdly, the program on 5-30 was some of the best racing that I have seen ever at the speedway. Keep up the good work and I think the cars will return.

In closing..........GOOD JOB GUYS!!!!

Age to Get a Pit PassFri, 1 May 2009 17:35:22 -0700

You must be 16yrs old to go in the pits.  The only exception is the drivers of visiting and special groups with younger age requirements and they must be a driver to be in the pits.  Safety is very important to us and that is the reason for the strict rules on age requirements.  I hope this is not an inconvenience for you.  Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Thank You,

 a great driver
Hi, my name is Sierra Guenther. First I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read my e-mail, My dad is very interested in racing for Stockton 99 Speedway but at the moment he doesn’t have a car to race in. If there is anyone looking for a driver in street stock, I know one. He has past experiences in racing he was a driver, also a crew chief. He is an amazing driver, he is also a very caring and loving person. We come to the races every weekend and it would be that much more exciting to see my dad do something he loves.

Please contact me at anytime if there comes an opening

my number is (209) 570 2585

Thank you,

Sierra Guenther

Carol and Tony, have you heard from Harry Belleto or Kevin Gottula any of them guys? Where they are, and/or if they still running at races? I know some of the others run in higher levels that are not ran (YET) at 99 speedway.....YET .....but i know you two are working on that stuff for the future.

Just curious what the past local drivers are up to?

Thanks again,

Dave Cameron

Dave, I believe Kevin has been to the track, but only with his son Kyle Gottula. The Bellettos are racing at Madera, maybe you fans could let them know you'd like to see them at 99! (Note: The Belletto's returned to 99 April 18th with three cars. Jeff, Harry and Nick.)

"Markus Bowden" <bowdini@comcast.net>
Mon, 13 Apr 2009

I've been fortunate enough to be a part of Stockton's rich history in the days when it was the greatest (the Reed, Boyd, Irvan, Stramiska, Fritz era). I grew up at the track and seldom missed a Saturday night until I was about 18 years old. Beyond that it was hit and miss, growing up and all. I peeked in every once in awhile to see what was going on and was proud to see that from a fans perspective not much had changed. Fast forward to closing night of the speedway. It was emotional and a little bitter sweet. I was sad to not see so many of
the drivers that put 99 on the map, but hey, it was still a great night.

Now here we are in '09, the "rebirth of the New 99 Speedway" And I must say you have done an outstanding job with the facility. The track, bleachers, concessions (very nice) and that incredible sound system! We were very disappointed at the lack of drivers and lack of spectators but I assumed it would take a while to work out all the new
bugs, so I let it go....until.

What in the hell was that? You lost a lot of fans with the whole Philpott scandal. People left by the hundreds after the 27 was expelled and Dave went on to win. Many "fingers" were thrown and I saw elderly men, men that had been coming out to 99 for decades say, "I'm done with this, see ya later."

Dave is the only familiar name dating back 30+ years and it was a HUGE letdown to see how he and the officials pretty much owned that race. Political? I'd say. Not to mention his comment over the PA was just plain stupid.I was so excited about the rebirth and getting my 7 and 5 year old kids out to see where there daddy used to hang out when he was their
age. The heros have left the building and so have I.

Sadly, after 36 years, I will not be returning.

Best of luck.

Markus, I wasn't there this week. Sounds like I missed a good one. Thanks for the kind words and loyalty over the years. You truly are a fan. I hope you can reconsider, whatever happened certainly was "heat of the moment" for all concerned. The goal of the track is to build it back up. Nobody would purposely try to go against that. Let's see how it plays out, I see these comments on most tracks sites, you know, there's 1 winner and the rest aren't and if it aint rubbin', it aint racin'. We've got a tough little bull ring and split seconds to make decisions. The track is new and so are a lot of the employees, like you said above, it'll take some time to work out the bugs. Hang in there, great fans are hard to find!

Its all worth it

Hey Carol and Toni,

Glad that Adam is gonna be ok, even being an Official is a physical challenge. My dad Orvil is wanting to get back to work there... and has enjoyed his little time off.

I Wanted to comment on the ones who feel the need to find stuff negative about 99 speedway, this is just starting back up and its going to take patience from all to build her. Little issues will be resolved in time, and the Noceti's are right on top of things......but they have A LOT of things to do!! Watch the changes as weeks go on.

Thanks Toni and Carol,

We attended the April 4 races at your speedway, and were unfortunate witnesses to your crew man being hit and badly injured by a race car.  Are you able to give us ANY update with regard to how he is doing now?

Julie

Julie,

As it turned out, thank God, he was knocked down and not badly hurt. The CAT scan was clean and his leg was Not broken. It was a very bad scare but everything appears to be OK!!

Thank you so much for that update.  Our 5 children witnessed it (it was our first ever venture to car races), and they will be happy to know that all is ok.  Thank you again.

Opening Day

I would like to address your comments to the person who submitted his concerns about opening day,  specifically, the comments about bringing food in.  You said that it has always been the policy that the speedway not allow outside food through the gate.  I find that statement absolutely hilarious, if not absurd.  I have been going to that track since the early 1980's.  I recall my parents stopping by the old 29 cent hamburger stand on Hammer Lane and bringing in sacks of burgers for us to eat during the races.  After that, it was 99 cent whoppers from Burger King and Subway sandwiches.  I can remember working on the safety crew at the track and waiting for my girlfriend to arrive in the grandstands with my dinner (usually from Burger King).  As an adult, I remember cooking dozens of hot dogs at home, wrapping them in aluminum foil, then bringing them to the track in an insulated bag in order to pass throughout the stands to family, friends, and other hungry race fans.  This was, of course, in addition to the bottled waters, sodas, corn nuts, microwave popcorn, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and potato chips that I brought in.  Sure, we were always searched coming through the gate, but anything was fine as long as it did not come in a glass bottle or a can.  THAT IS THE WAY IT ALWAYS WAS.

Christian, you are correct. Thanks for letting me make my point clearer. No food brought in, has always been the policy. Because of the "old" setup at the track, the policy wasn't enforced. The track is under new management and they have their new set of rules, which they are enforcing. They also have brought in many new delicious food items, such as strawberry funnel cake, kettle corn and hamburgers. I know they are keeping the admission prices and food prices extremely affordable in these tough times. Compare their prices to other venues and you'll see. So great food, great racing at an affordable and convenient location...what more could a race fan want!!!

Thank You

I just wanted to let you know how thrilled my son was to have had the
opportunity to attend last Saturday's 99 Speedway race and see two cars
racing for autism. My husband and son were fortunate enough to chat with
those involved with Race for Autism and Autism Speaks. Our 25 year old son,
Todd, faces the challenges of being on the autism spectrum. However, those
challenges seem to be diminished when he is participating in the activities
he loves. Watching car races at the 99 Speedway was an activity that he
absolutely loved. We are so delighted that the track is open again and that
people like you are involved with the races.

Years ago United Cerebral Palsy took a small group of clients to the
Speedway as part of their respite program. It was during these events that
my son became a racecar fan. Do you happen to know if the Speedway has
reduced cost tickets for charitable organizations? It sure would be nice if
this program could resume for those clients that are interested in the
Speedway.

spectator safety and comfort
Hi, I hate to bring this up because I know that it's a sensitive subject but it's really important.  I went to the Cup race at Las Vegas a couple weeks ago and there was no smoking in the seats.  Second hand smoke is proven to be harmful, especially to both older and younger people.  How are you going to address this?  I really appreciate your concern.

Thanks, Tom Van Horn

Tom, A new "Family Section" has been marked and no smoking or drinking is allowed there!! Come out and see a race!! Thanks for the comments.

Thank You from South Carolina

Dear Tony and Carol
I wanted to thank you for all you have done to bring back Stockton 99 speedway. Last summer I flow back to see mom, dad, my children and granchildern. You see I now live in South Carolina because I had a chance to get on Bud Moore's old team. And what a time I had. While I was in Stockton I had to go see 99 speedway one last time, or so I thought. I walked through a hole in the fence and walked out onto the track. I had tears running down my face as I looked at the place I spent so much of my childhood and life at. I just couldn't believe how the old girl looked that day. I picked up a couple of chunks of the race track right in front of the flag stand where I watched my dad wave the flags so long ago. I have those chuncks here in my home to this day. 99 keep myself as well as a lot of other youngster out of trouble because we had something great to do. I love 99 and I hole to get out your way again this coming summer to see yet another race at the famed Stockton 99 Speedway. I thank you and your wife for all your devotion and hard work of giving the ol gal a new face lift. May you have many many years of great racing.
  Sincerely
   Duane Kelley
PS. I will be keeping tabs by way of the Web.
        God Bless and safe racing

Comments on Opening Day

Overall, a great day.  For what it's worth here is some feedback if you want it.  You know where the delete key is.

Things you did right:

The racing was great despite the limited car count.  We all hope that it'll grow as the year continues  The officials did a great job and kept things moving and didn't make any glaring mistakes.  The place looked amazing, even better than we all expected.  Great to see a strong security presence also, and they were pleasant and courteous.  The price for admission was reasonable for an afternoon of entertainment.  I like the senior rate which I took advantage of since I attended with my wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandson from Folsom.  The announcer was good and we could hear him.  Maybe just have him not take himself so serious at times.  It's just a local show and auto racing, not show business.

Things I didn't care for:

Not being able to bring in candy bars, water, seeds, etc.  In today's economy, it's difficult to pay for admission for the whole family and then be expected to buy everything at the track.  I've never seen this anywhere except at fairground tracks where the gate and concessions are shared with the Fair Board.  In this case it doesn't make sense unless you are hurting for finances and need 100 percent of the gate and concessions just to survive.  This rule, I believe will hurt your gate in the long run.  I know I won't count on going to the races every week as I was expecting to do, because I can't afford the $8.00 Tri Tips, $5.00 beers, over priced and soggy hot dogs, plus the price of admission.  We were planning on buying some food anyway, but being forced to do so was not expected nor appreciated.  Next time I go, I'll have a meal before we arrive and pay for a $1.00 bottle of Costco water to get us through the night.  I've been going to the Old Stockton 99 since the late 60s and have never been denied bringing in some snacks and water.  I guess that's the price for the "New" Stockton 99.  Sometimes "New" is not so hot.

You had 5-6 windows open at the concession stand but although there were numerous people standing around inside, they didn't bother to ask if we wanted anything.  Your "helpers" were only responding to customers if they happen to be at the right window.  We had to guess which ones were the right ones.

The two young ladies who sang the National Anthem were the worst I've ever heard, ever.  If your going to sing the National song, you should expect that they know how the song goes.  They didn't.

The fireworks don't work in the daytime, duh!  You wasted your and our money. Maybe if you had decided to forget this exercise, we could have brought in our pack of sunflower seeds.  By the way, you didn't have any to sell.

But, as I said, overall it was a good show and worth a look.

Thanks for listening if you're still there.

Jerry.

Jerry,

Thanks for writing and especially for attending our opening day race.

Did you know that it has always been the policy of the track that food not be brought in? It's being enforced and for good reason. The investment to get the track opened on time is enormous! Concessions are one of the main resources for the track to recoup their investment. Also if you compare admission prices and concession prices with other venues, such as the Stockton Event Center or even At&T Park, our prices are extremely less. You know it was only the second event of the "New" 99, there's a good 6 to 8 weeks of work left to get everything in shape.

The car count will increase as the year goes on. It was great to see 20 cars in the WLM Main, we expect at least 6 new cars this coming show, Sat Night. How'd you like the Heats? Great to see heat races again.

The singers were definitely unique with their rendition. Your heart had to go out to them. The National Anthem is one of the most difficult songs to sing, and there is a terrible delay on the track when you sing it. I think it would throw a lot of seasoned pros off.

Again, thanks for coming and the kind words and constructive criticism, I know you Love the track and have been one of our biggest supporters for years.

See you next week,

Carol and Tony,
I am glad to hear that the speedway will once again be in operation as I frequented it for several years.  Not to rain on anyones parade, however, I stopped going after my last two visits resulted in my truck being broken into in the parking lot and a "who cares" attitude from security when myself and 6 others reported the thefts the last time.  Will there be better security to prevent this kind of problem when the track reopens?  I have recently gotten my wife into watching saturday night short track racing in Roseville but would much rather make the trip from Loomis to your facility if improvements are made in the area I addressed.

With the investment of time and money into the re-opening of the track we are striving to make it a "family friendly" and safe place to enjoy America's NASCAR Racing. Come and experience our reduced pricing and renovated facility.

Racing at Stockton 99?
Hello,
Am checking with you to see if Stockton 99 Speedway has a road course in addition to the oval?
I'm an Altamont Formula 4 competitor, and since it looks like they may not open this year, am checking around for road courses to race.
I hear a lot of anticipation about Stockton Speedway, but so far have not heard about a road course. If not, any suggestions?
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
--RJD2
There is going to be a road course for the enduro's and 4 banger division as we are going to use a part of the figure 8 in order to have a road course configuration.

Thank You,
Carol Noceti

are the bombers goin to run on the oval or only on the figure 8?

Millerrail@aol.com

The bombers are a nascar sanctioned division and will be running on the oval.  The figure 8 is going to be for the figure 8 races and to create a road course for the enduro guys and possibly other divisions.  Hope this answers your questions.

Thank You,

Message for Carol
Hi Carol:

I don't know if you remember me but sat across the aisle from you saving the seats for Jason Philpot and Danny Contessotto.  I now am living in Washington state but will be moving back to Stockton mid spring.  I wanted to know if I could volunteer to the man the grandstand area before the front gate opens up, to make sure that no body puts there blankets down before the front gate opens.  I did this for about 3 years before the track closed.  Also some of the other duties that I did was clean out the front ticket booths, getting it ready for the day .was like a welcome wagon if you will to the driver as they came through the pit gate.  I also did the sign in which was  to the side of where the drivers and crew signed in. Some of those that i signed in and gave wrist bands  included those of track officials, concession workers, newspaper people, vendors etc.  I would really like to do this again on a volunteer basis.  I have gone to 99 Speedway since I was 8 years old and like others was very sad to see it close.  I was so glad to hear that you and Tony decided to put in ions of time to resurrect it.  Please contact me at ib4racn @aol.com.  I sent you this message as I am not able to attend the job fair at the Clarion.  Hope that my all my past experience at the track will be helpful in making 99 Speedway the place to be every Saturday night in 2009 and future years.

Thank You

Great things in 2009
I was so happy to hear that 99 was going to be back in business.  I am a die hard race fan.  I got into racing through friends

In 1985.  I went every Saturday night to Roseville Speedway in Roseville CA for about 15 years.  Then one weekend I came

To Stockton 99 to watch some friends race and I was addicted to the track.  I came back to 99 almost every weekend.

The race program and the whole evening program was the best I had ever seen.  My favorite cars are the Modifieds.

I saw the blog from Dave Philpott and I am glad he will be back.  I have watched the Philpotts for years. My favorites

Were Steminska, D. Bird, J. Lathstrom, Philpotts, Eric Schmidt (my ex son-in-law worked on his car).

I plan to be there for your opening night and many more race nights to come.

Thanks again!!!

Racing
Hi There!

It is so great to learn that the track is finally opening back up! I started attending races in the late 60's with my parents. My brother, David, raced late models from 78 to 85. I helped my son in law with a street stock in 05 and also helped build Charlie Clawsons Championship motor.. And I was there on the final night with a bus that we raced in the final event. I read that you are going to have a figure 8 track. Is that going to be for the bombers or special events? Also are you going to have a bus race this year? A figure 8 bus race would be AWESOME!! We would love the chance of bringing another one down.

                                                              Thanks, Chris Catlett
Yes, a figure eight has been added!!! Bombers, go carts, pitting cars, all kinds of things could happen there!! Ever heard of TRAIN racing?? Here's pictures of the new surface and the grounds as they get spruced up for opening day in March!!! Click Here!!

Where would I find the rules for the Bomber Division?  Also do you know of any cars that might be for sale?

 John Baldwin

You will find the rules at www.stockton99.com when they come out.  (Click Here)

Our goal is to have the rules ready by Thanksgiving.  Thank you for your interest.

Thank You,

Hi gang. I stopped by the track last week to see if it was still a jungle. I talked to a very nice lady about the track and the agenda for it. She told me it would open March of 09. My wife and I pretty much lived at the track for ten years and that it was holy ground to me. She might remember that line. Any way, I would like to start building a new street stock car and would like the rules for that class ASAP or for any rules in a similar class. thanks for putting my track back together,

"Go Green This Time"

It is awesome that 99 speedway is making it's comeback.  I first attended the track in the late 50's with my brother and his then girlfriend, now wife.  I was in the 8th grade in Modesto.  My first recollection of drivers was Jack McCoy in his purple super modified, and Sanchez in his red straight 8 Buick, now that was "racing".  I returned to the track again in the 60's with my wife Karen, the 70's with my three daughters, Shawan, Alicia & Annette and for years after with about 14 family members on a regular basis, sitting in the "Belletto" rooting section.   I also took my three son-in-laws Todd, Donnie and Larry (Robbie), Robbie was on Jeff Bellettos' pit crew for a number of years. In the 60's I helped Bobby Gaines build a "claimer" and when he asked if I wanted to "run her" in a Saturday Night race, I got cold feet and couldn't do it. The track has very fond memories for our family and it is great to see it to soon be back "on track" once again.

In recent years we have visited both Altamont and Madera, however, nothing will replace the nostalgia of the "99 SPEEDWAY".   Thank you all for your insight and initiative to see that this great track will once again will "GO GREEN" on Saturday Nights.

Stockton 99 speedway has been a big part of my life and I was very sad when it was closed. I have many memories of sitting in turn 4 with my father and his friends when I was young. My family goes way back with 99 speedway and for that matter auto racing in general. I was not yet born when my father set a track record at 99 in a Jalopy in 55' or when he was track champion in both 58' and 59' driving a Hardtop. but I remember sitting in the stands listening to all the story's (most of them I was assured were even true). I want to thank you because now I will be able to take my son to 99 and sit in the stands telling him the story's about his grandfather whom he was named after. I like many others did not know how much I would miss 99 until it was gone. I wish you good luck in your venture to re-open 99 I hope it will survive much longer than the 5 year lease.

If anyone would like to sponsor a alsc i would love to come back to the roots and drive for ya’ll. I can be reached at arstephe@netscape.net

I Can’t believe it

The first race I ever went to was the 72 season, I only missed the 76 season due to my parents moving me to Oregon,  well I was only five,  As a kid growing up in Manteca all I ever wanted to do was go to the races.  I would beg my dad all day on Saturdays in the summer to take me, he was a former driver of 99, and didn’t like to sit in the stands, but sometimes he would give in.  When it closed a part of me died.  I look through the history pages all the time just to remind me of a place I used to go on Saturdays. People who don’t understand say I need to get a life,  well April of 09,  I will live again,  I will exit the freeway and drive through the palm trees and see the lights are "on".  It will feel like walking into my grandparents house 10 years after they have died and loving their neck one more time.  Tony thank you, for doing this. You are a saint.

I'd like to add that Bill was great enough to send 5 pictures of his uncle Ted Fritz. (His hero, an off track accident ended his racing career), We will make a feature of them, they'll be posted soon, then added to our history pages. If anyone else has pix or info from the track 's glorious past please send them here: Submit

Thanks Bill, see you at 99!!

When I got home from football practice and my mom showed me the article in The Record about 99 might be back I was pretty hyper with excitement. Normally I'm drained lol Reading the article brought back so many memories. I grew up at the track watching my dad race and when we opened up our business and my dad stopped racing I always watched all the cars he built. Some of the stuff I miss the most was running down the big hills behind the bleachers, winning the big wheel races, and using my flags by the flag stand. Those were some fun days. hopefully everything goes through.

Racing once again!!!???
Sat, 23 Aug 2008 09:52:19 -0700

I would be so glad if racing came back to Stockton 99

I was pretty much raised their at that track for watching the races up in the stands to being in the pits helping out drivers and learning about the cars they drive

the most I remember is running around the track after the races where over  jumping for big tire to big tire till I was so tired and well maybe get to even race at 99 will be my biggest goal and go for it thanks again for helping out to getting things back in order up there.

Greg Streeter

Greg,
That's awesome! I haven't thought about the tractor tires all around the infield in years! It makes me think of the peanut shells under the bleachers, how loud certain cars were, the smell of rubber and transmissions.....

RECONSTRUCTION FOR 99 REOPENING...
Tue, 19 Aug 2008 23:39:15 +0000 [08/19/2008 07:39:15 PM EDT]
Rumor-mongers unite
...word is the track is scheduled to reopen in the 2009 season. Local racers have been updated; Stockton City Municipal Codes have been OK'd and the new owner will start construction for new seating and making other local code updates that require Handicap accessibility and of course new pavement on the track. (TURN ONE SEATING IS STILL THERE GUYS, I'VE SEEN IT! NOT 99 W/OUT IT!!!)

I grew up just down the road from the track and remember watching races from the fence on the playground of the old 99 drive-in, circa:1958-____.  My son and daughter went all the time with there dad until his death and after that my boy would just go and hang around after the races, formed friendship and found himself working on a pit crew...so I had to go! I'm glad I got to see races at NASCAR'S oldest raceway in CA and now to hear that rumors might be true about it's reopening is great.

If anyone out there has heard any different or has some news not heard by us locals, please let me know.

What a sad day, a backhoe at the start - finish line.

My wife (Sue) and I had been journeying down to 99 out of Elk Grove for about 15 years. This was the best track around and from the first time we attended to the last night we always sat in turn 1....what a place to watch a the races.

Are you planning on selling small chunks of the asphalt? Have a commemorative
99 plaque would be ideal. This would be a great fund raiser of some sort.

Have you heard any mention of where most of the WLM & GA drivers are going this year?

Cheers to you mate & take care
David Haas

Yes, pieces of the start finish line are at the Souvenirs Store.

The final checkered flag flies
The voice and sounds of Stockton 99 Speedway fall silent tonight

Published Saturday, Sep 16, 2006

They’ll be racing for the final time at Stockton 99 Speedway tonight.

Credit: Victor J Blue/ The Record

In the distance, I hear the roar of engines on the racetrack, wondering what the guys and gals will do on a Saturday night in the summer from now on.

After tonight, there'll be no more stock-car racing at Stockton 99 Speedway.

It's been the thing to do on a Saturday night for so very long. My father raced there. My brother-in-law raced there - and was, and is, the dude behind the microphone calling the races as they go.

Home-grown in east Stockton, Wayne Pierce is a legend in his own mind and others. He has a heart of gold and the charm to prove it all.

He's devoted a lot of time and energy to the speedway, making all who go there feel at home and laugh.

Calling the races as they go isn't easy, and there's no money in the world that could get most people to put up with all that.

He's done one heck of a job. With the help of his wife, Debbie (my sister), he gathers all information and gives it to us, blow by blow.

His little girl, Jessie, takes plenty of pictures and has captured the good and the scary of it all.

The fun for young and old will be missed - more than anyone could know if they didn't grow up here.

What's gonna happen when it's no longer there? The movies? Whoopee.

Doesn't anyone know any-thing about Stockton? The good things to do on a Saturday night are gone.

People like Pierce, the racers and fans will have to live in the pictures and memories of yesterday.

The racetrack closing down is a mistake.

Cynthia Ann Kelley

Stockton

» NOTE: Stockton 99 Speedway, which opened in 1947, will close permanently after tonight's races. The Wilson Way property has been sold and will become a housing development.

to all friends and fans of Mark and Brenda Mays. Although the news is tragic and unbearable, it is with a heavy heart that i tell of the loss of their daughter Cassandra, she was taken in a roll over accident in which she was a passenger. on Saturday night near S.J. hospital, she was only 17. The following article appeared in the Record.

Teen girl killed in car accident

The Record
Published Monday, Jul 31, 2006

STOCKTON - One teenage girl was killed and another has major head trauma as the result of an early-morning car accident in Stockton on Sunday involving four teens, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both girls were passengers in a 2005 Toyota Matrix driven by an 18-year-old Stockton girl. The vehicle flipped after the driver veered off the road when turning a corner along Howard Road at high speed, according to the CHP.

The driver had minor scrapes on her left arm, and a male passenger, 19, had no injuries, according to the CHP.

The teen killed was a 17-year-old Stockton girl whose identity was not released Sunday. The other passenger, a 16-year-old Stockton girl, was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital with major head trauma, according to the CHP.

Officers concluded that drugs and alcohol had no role in the accident.

So Cal Fan

Sorry to hear your track is going to close. I went to Cajon Speedway for 18 yrs,and many other tracks for many years. Spent my youth to my midlife on Saturday nights watching anything race. Finally built a car to run at Cajon. Got 2 seasons in and the Airport took their property back.I'm running on dirt now, much prefer pavement. Saner racing on pavement. Was going to do a Pure Stock tour of California next year, and looked forward to Stockton. Guess that won't happen. I enjoy the friends and the action at a race track. Can't be replaced anyother way. Good luck to all out there.

For those of you who personally knew or knew of Bob Barkhimer, you may like to know that my grandfather passed away this past Sunday morning.

Former Stockton 99 race promoter dies

Former Stockton 99 Speedway promoter Bob Barkhimer, who brought Stockton's quarter-mile oval and 20 other tracks in California and Oregon under the NASCAR banner in 1954, died Monday at age 91. Barkhimer was inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2002. He had written about his start in auto racing — how he fell in love with it at age 21 after seeing his first race in Emeryville. Stockton 99 promotor and co-owner Ken Clapp bought out Bob Barkhimer Associates in 1977 and has often credited Barkhimer for being a major force in his career.

Thank You
June 11, 2006
I would like to express the deep and heart-felt "Thanks" to Charlie Clawson of Modesto, for letting Joe Allen aka "JoeRacer" of Stockton drive his ALSC car at Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday June 10, 2006. Modesto has a great and kind person among them and I would like to let him and Ken as well as their families how much their kindness and understanding are appreciated by Joe, myself, our family and fans. Joe is racing for a championship and has to be on the track for every race to have a chance at the championship. After blowing a motor on June 3, Joe returned June 10 with a back up motor that was acting funny and in fear of blowing another motor and possibly damaging his car or possibly even other cars around him on the track should the motor have been raced that night, we choose not to run the red #1 JoeRacer car. It was not worth the risk, but Joe had to race to stay in the running for the points. Charlie's show of sportsmanship as well and kind heart definitely showed Saturday when he agreed to let Joe race his #15 car, last years championship car. It is hard to find respectful and compassionate people now a days and Modesto definitely has one in Charlie Clawson. The whole town should be proud of him and the kind of person he is. Last year Charlie and Joe put on more than once a great show of stock car racing with door to door and side by side racing that was clean and fun for all to watch, keeping fans on the edge of their seats for all 30 laps. That's what racing is all about and Charlie is definitely a true racer at heart and will always be in our thoughts. If we had more drivers like Charlie racing would truly be about fun and family. If the world had more people like Charlie Clawson it would be a better place.no doubt. It's rare to see a driver/car owner give up his car to another driver, but Charlie did and did so with excitement to see Joe race his car. That is just so rare in racing.

Again..THANK YOU..Charlie. For allowing JoeRacer to drive your car. You are a wonderful person. All I can say is what goes around comes around and with his show of sportsmanship Saturday night Charlie definitely has some good luck coming his way, and deserves every bit of it.

Deepest Thanks,
Joe, Calley and the whole JoeRacer Team

I was just looking at the Hotwood 1000 point standings. Pete Anderson Jr is listed as the leader with 305 points. With 4 rounds in the book I was wondering
how he accumulated that many points. In round 1 he finished 3rd, round 2 he finished 5th, round 3 he finished 2nd and round 4 he finished 2nd. Those
finishes equal 184 points. He was docked 5 points during 1 race. That would put point total to 179, but you have him with 305 points. I was wondering where the
other 126 points came from. Other drivers also have points that I cant figure out where they came from. If you could please explain how you came up with these
figures it would be greatly appreciated. From a concerned and confused fan.

From the track Manager,
under the new format they have the 16 best finishes including the 50 lappers. so we went back to race one and added points from them instead of waiting until race 16, when they reach the 17th race we will keep the best finish and throw the other one out, its run like the region runs the division ll. when you add up the points only the straight up finishes is counted, do not count dash or qual points..this is for the 1000 format only and not the track points....
Thanks for asking!

Re: Question from Calley on 4/23/06
On 4/23/06 Calley wrote in to you asking about drivers from any class who have broken a record and won all of their events in a night at Stockton/99.  On April 15th, just 3 days after his 16th birthday, Johnathan Hale of Rio Linda, CA did just that as a Rookie in the Baby Grands Division.  In his #15 Napa Auto Parts BG, Johnathan set a new track record, won the trophy dash and the main event.

Hello,
I was wondering if there is an autograph session scheduled for Saturday evening as there has been the past few times that the Grand National West Series has been at the track? If so, approximately when is it supposed to occur? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Pro-4 Truck Rules
2006 Rules state that steel body trucks must have rubber bumpers. I did not see any rubber bumpers on truck # 2 and # 42 at last weeks race. Why are these rules not being enforced?
I'm no official but I'll bet these were new trucks here for the first time, and were allowed to run as long as they change over for next time.

In the past
Can you tell me if any driver in any division in any year has ever Broke track record for fast time, set fast qualifing time, won trophy dash and the main all in 1 night. It was a clean sweep and breaking track record. I would like to know how many drivers have done this. I think its a pretty big deal and want to know who else has done this.
 Thanks
 Calley
Calley, What your asking for is who has swept their division over the last 60 years. We don't know exactly, but I'll guess that Dan Reed, Kenny Boyd, Harry Belletto, Johnny Brazil, Joe Juisti, Tony Quieirolo, Fred Hunt, Donny Hickman, David Philpott, Charlie Sanchez, Jack McCoy, as well as Joe Allen have done it!

Hi Pat,

First off I want to say what a nice experience I had at the track yesterday.  It was the first time I had been to the 99 track.  Everyone was so nice and helpful and seemed liked they wanted to help and take care of me.  My son was racing there for the first time and I was a little hesitant about going there and it was going to be  all new to me.  Well it could not have been better for me.  Everywhere I turned people were reaching out to me.  All in all it was really great.
The track people who work there and the fans.  I can hardly wait for Rick's next race.
Thanks for doing a great job.

I hate to see the 2006 season come to a end. I will miss the races very
much. I remember coming to the races when I was a young girl with my parents and
watching the races and also watching the movies at 99 drive in  at the same
time. I have been coming down in the pit area for the last 3 years with my
boyfriend, in the Wilson Way Tow truck. i never thought I would ever be in the
pitts. Its more exciting down in the pitts. You really get to see more of the
cars and whats really going on. I wish with all my heart that the track wasn't
coming to a end...THANK YOU STOCKTON 99 FOR ALL THE GOOD RACES...

Moving 99 Speedway
I was reading in this months Stock car magazine that Bakersfield is going to be building a new track not 20 mins from town. Is by chance anyone looking into doing the same for Stockton. Or is Stockton just another town that really doesn't care if there is anything to keep people busy and off the streets at night. In other words out of trouble. I just hate to see Stockton fall off the map as a racing history town. I now live in SC and have for the last 7 years. But I will be coming to one more race this summer before 99 Speedway is tore down and the air is silenced from the roar of engines and fans forever more.

The Pentagon announced today the formation of a new 500-man elite fighting unit called the United States Redneck Special Forces. These Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia boys will be dropped off into IRAQ and have been given only the following facts about terrorists:

1. The season opened today.

2. There is no limit.

3. They taste just like chicken.

4. They don't like beer, pickups, country music or Jesus.

5. They are DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for the death of Dale Earnhardt.

We expect the problem in Iraq to be over by Friday.

Countdown begins for 99 Speedway
When racing ends at the Stockton landmark, he'll be in mourning

Cars roar through a turn during the opening race at Stockton 99 Speedway on April 3

Credit: The Record, Stockton, CA

I'll always remember the morning of Sept. 22, 2005.

No, not because of a hurricane or a bombing or anything quite that horrific.

To my horror and dismay and disillusionment, The Record reported that the greatest little race track -- known as Stockton 99 Speedway -- was closing down after next year.

Wow, I felt like one of my oldest, dearest friends had died.

I've been attending races at 99 Speedway for 38 years.

My dad used to take me to the track every Friday night when the races were on Friday nights, and I continued to go all through the years.

Like many people, I grew up going to 99 Speedway, and it became part of my life from April to late September every year.

My birthday is July 1, and I spend that weekend every year at the track for the Firecracker 100 and the festivities that go on.

I don't know what I'll do on that night anymore without 99 to go to.

I'm so tired of money controlling everything. This race track is a monument, an institution.

It just doesn't seem right for developers to come in and destroy something so many people enjoy and have enjoyed for 60 years.

I thank all the drivers through the years for giving us so many memories and exciting Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons.

There are way too many to name.

But McCoy, Hunt, Brazil, Strmiska, Belletto, Philpott, Collins, Quierilo, Boyd, Irvan, Anderson, Moore, Shafer, Gottula and all the rest gave us so many thrills and spills.

To track owner Ken Clapp, we understand he wants to make money from selling the old place.

But couldn't he at least try to sell it to someone who wants to keep the track open and keep the great tradition that is 99 Speedway going on for another 60 years?

Don't we already have enough business parks or parking lots or houses or whatever the developers are going to do with the land?

Doesn't a historical place -- like 99 Speedway -- that brings so many people enjoyment every summer transcend the money?

Countless people's summers never will be the same without that grand old track we all know as 99 Speedway.

Hi!
My name is Kristi. I am 14 yrs. old and I really love race cars and racing. I really want to race when I get older. My dad and brother both race so I'm always at the track watching them. When I turn 16, my dad says he will build me a race car and I will get to race too. The track we go to has three female drivers already, but I know I can beat them. What I want to do right now is try and collect a program from as many tracks as I can. If you could please send me a program I would really like that. If I need to I will pay for it, I can use my allowance. Thanks!!!!! Kristi {aka} RACERGIRL

allison's nickname.
Hey, great racing last night. Just when you think that the points race is getting away from people, a night like that happens! Glad to see Humphries win, nice change to the winner's circle. Anderson was there but that seems to be the way things happen at Stockton. Pete's a good driver, too bad. Next week, right! Hey just a suggestion for Allison's nickname, this coming from her first win a few weeks ago where she won from the outside on the restarts, Allison "High side" Duncan. Consider it. Tell Wayne and Bruce. See you next time, Turn one fan.

Thanks for the ideas! We are having a nickname contest for Allison Duncan.............got anymore ideas folks?
Allison Duncan Donuts has already been taken.....

Way to go Brother!
I just wanted to say good job to my brother for his practice session on Friday, 06/24... it has been a long time waiting for him to race! He has been a supporter of many friends that have raced at the track and he finally is getting his chance to race. I look forward to seeing him race on the 9th. And "Knucklehead" was sure watching his uncle putt around the track! Way to go Tim and remember..."it's the pedal on the right!" HAHA!!!!

David Anadon # 61
David Anadon is the Driver for car # 61 in the "limited stock cars".  He'll be 22 this year.  He spent 4 years in the United States Army serving and fighting for his country.  (His last year in the Army was spent in Iraq driving a M1A2 Abrahm tank).  He came home from Iraq just barely over 1 year ago.  He was honorably discharged from the Army in September of 2004.  There will be about 25 of us in the stands in today's race cheering him on!   (He has 10 brothers and sisters, a wife and 1 1/2 year old son, mom, dad and all the siblings spouses and their kids!)

Happy Fathers Day All
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Elwood, Charlie, Jo and the Ambulance Crew. Last night was a heck of a ride for this single parent of one and his pure stock sled. I think it is a safe assumption that I scared all of us to pieces. I am truly grateful to those at 99 that make this sport so much fun. I thanked the big fella upstairs for all of us. While we all know that racing is a dangerous sport, the one thing that I think is often overlooked is the family of people that make it happen and make it safe. I wish to thank you for all that you have done.............and yes I will be back

Hey, Im a 14 year old from California who would love to race, but I do not have the funds to purchase a mini stock, or a legend. I race the karts up in Sacramento at race place Motorsports. To be honest im not the fastest but I am consistent and consistency wins races. If anyone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction. My height is around 6'1-6'2 and i weigh about 250 ish if that matters or not. I would love to race but as I said I cannot afford it.

Thanks,

I'm impressed, Thank You!!
I am happy to be able to write a nice thankful letter this week, instead of the letter I wrote last race.
You have restored my faith in honesty and fairness this week!
You and your officials followed your word and rules and kept this weeks race honest, fair, legal, very entertaining and fun.
Thank you for giving our drivers the chance to win/race in a fair/legal manner. Your officials did a good thing out there.
I look forward to a season of excitement at 99 Speedway, and plenty of good fun.
Keep up the hard work guys/gals.

# 8 Race Result Concerns

Let me start off by clearing up some things.  First of all, # 8 was informed of these “illegal” parts of the car on playday, the day before the first race, and was instructed that he had one week (7 days) to make the necessary adjustments or he would be disqualified. So, these “illegal” parts were found BEFORE THE RACE STARTED, not after it.  And, during the meeting with the officials after Sunday’s race, he was again informed that he would not lose his win nor his points because of the one week time limit the official gave EVERYBODY (not just Kannai) on playday for adjustments to their cars.

So, maybe you guys should get ALL YOUR FACTS straight before protesting or disagreeing with any results.  Yes, I agree this track has its fair share of “#@$%^&”, but Kannai has always been one of the drivers who’s ended up on the “screwed” side; so, yes, it feels good to finally get a break!

Ok there seems to be some people here that don't have any clue about what they are talking about. First off the air filter is not a K&N filter, it is a $10.00 filter from Pep Boys. There is no roller anything in the car. The officials teck'd me well and the only problem was the brake bias adjusters. The rumors were all that was spread around the track about me being DQ'd and getting the trophy and not the points. They knew about the adjusters on Sat the day before and gave me a week to change them. I think you guys that complain need to know what you are talking about.. ....Kannai #8

Hello I was wondering why you guys canceled. I bet you are really regretting it? I was really looking forward to coming this weekend to support one of your drivers. It totally recked my weekend when it said on your web site the races were cancled.
Please E-mail me back letting me know why you canceled. Buugaboo92@aol.com

Dear Buugaboo, of course we're regretting canceling, we had a dynamite USAC show planned. The good news is it's rescheduled for May 14th. The reason we cancelled is that the infield and some of the pits and the parking lots are dirt. Although they're engineered to drain, the heavy rain made everything too muddy. Sorry about your weekend, hopefully we'll see you next weekend and May 14th.

american limited results

1st off the #8 car was deemed illegal in tech at the end of the night with roller cam, roller rochers, k & n air filter, and rear disk brakes with perposioning vaves.
How does he get any points or track record with an obvious out of class vehicle?
If this is the case i will make the #15 car illegal as hell to get into the 14 second range, then you guys will have a bigger headache because you will not be able to DQ us. You want to be consistent don't you?
2nd - The#31 car blew his tranny to cause a checker/yellow. By the way i read the nascar rule book, and your track rules, any car/cars that cause a yellow automatically go to the rear of the field. You did not do this. Instead giving him the 5th place position and points.
YOU KNOW BOTH OF THESE CONCERNS ARE NOT  " FAIR "
Lets start this year right, not all messed up.

Hi,
I am a fan and customer at the Stockton 99 speedway Racetrack.
I was there last Sunday on opening day.
I am very disappointed to know that a driver was given first place and also the first place points when it was found after the race, upon inspection of the top 4 winning cars, that the "supposed" winning car # 8 "Kannai Scantlen" had an engine that was "illegal" according to the new rules set by the officials and the track for this season.
I know he had many very visible "disqualifying" attributes on his engine and brakes that the officials at the track "seen","noted," ( and it was seen by other drivers, staff, fans, and crew members also) and decided that it would be better to just give him the first place trophy but not the first place points (I guess that was supposed to calm the storm), since he was ILLEGAL.
But as I looked at the Results of the race on the your websight, not only did he get a trophy and points for first place, but he even has the gall to comment about his tires being the reason for the win!!!!!!
According to THE RULES any illegal parts found on a car (WINNER or NOT) will be automatically disqualified.
I am a paying customer, who paid to see a race meant to be FUN,EXCITING,ENJOYABLE,and most of all FAIR and HONEST.
I truly feel that the choice the officials and 99 speedway made, was a very poor and dishonesty of information to they're Paying Drivers, paying customers, the public in general and the media.
I feel that every truth should be told and set straight to the Drivers..who pay a large amount of money to race at the track,....to the fans, who paid a large amount of money to see an HONEST race and HONEST results,......the public,.....and the truth be told to the media so they may report HONEST news of race results and not the hidden fact that the "first car to cross the finish line" car # 8 Kannai Scatlen should have been automtically disqualified and the next drivers in line move up to they're appropriate and fair standing in the Race.
I hope in good faith that you, or whoever it takes to set the record straight, will investigate this improper and unfair standards that happened at that Racetrack on 4-3-05
                                                                                          A concerned fan,

99 freqs/altamont freqs

I'm interested in racing freqs for 99 speedway and altamont.  Possibly putting a list together for fans to acquire.   Has anyone done this yet?

99 freqs

Greetings:

I'm interested in maintaining a list of drivers, pit crew radio frequencies for 99/altamont race tracks. I think the information would be a great asset for the racing fans enjoyment. Once I acquire a list I would submit to you guys for the website. Frequencies change sometimes so it would be preliminary throughout the racing season. Maybe someday you guys could even rent scanners like the big racetracks do.

Below are several freqs I acquired at 99/altamont thus far. Sorting out whose who is a monumental task, but some I already know.

466.1875 #20 or 27 Moore Racing - Allison Duncan

462.6000 #6 Jeff Belleto

463.0375 #30 Steve Belleto

461.9250

456.6500

467.6250

463.8125 SRL division

451.3625

451.2250 SRL division

466.1250

466.8500

466.8875

463.2750

456.2875 #42 ALSC - Justin Kelly

Any help, hints in maintaining this information would be greatly appreciated. I know I talked to Jo Shiels the day Allison Duncan and a couple National drivers were practicing at 99.

Thanks,

Jeff Lee
