LEGEND TITLES DECIDED AT STOCKTON 99.

BY JIM SHIELS

9-25-02

With racing action so close, titles in the interwoven three-tiered Legend division had to await the close scrutiny of Chief Official Jack Houston, while home recuperating this week from leg surgery (doing just fine- thank you).

The official final points for the nine-race Stockton series that ended September 21st, showed the Master Division crown going to Pete Currin of Redwood City by a slim three-point margin over Kelly Martin of Modesto. Pete, with help from his Crew Chief & wife Sue, put together a string of seven main top five finishes in the nine events to edge Martin for his first Stockton title.

Michael Morrissey of Kings Beach takes home the season crown for the Pro Division drivers with seven overall feature wins in his nine outings. Ryan Mosher of Cupertino tried his best to keep pace, but the talent of Morrissey and the superior handling of his 5/8th scale cycle powered racer proved to be too much, not only at the Pro level, but in the overall competition as well. The only sure way to prevent Morrissey from coming from the back to the front in the snap of an eye was to start him several miles outside the track. Although no overall Stockton award is given, Morrissey would have laid claim to that also.

A female, and a ‘good looker’ to boot, will grace the awards podium at the Legends of the Pacific awards dinner in the form of Semi Pro Division pilot Debbie Darnell of Livermore. Debbie, a first year student in the art, played a patience role, learning each week and bringing her track speeds down to a competitive level, while maintaining a steady smile. Debbie won a feature and finished in the top five on all nine nights at her division level.

Legendary NASCAR Official and Flagman Jack Houston and his "Mighty" Legends of the Pacific have competed at Stockton 99 Speedway since their conception in 1995 and will be a highly popular and welcome addition to the 2003 racing schedule at the famed quarter-mile high-banked asphalt track.
