STOCKTON 99 ENDURO PRODUCES 250-LAP ANDERSON-PABST DUEL
(STOCKTON, CA--October 3, 1999)--Thirty cars answered the bell Saturday night as Stockton 99 Speedway closed its 54th season with a 250-lap Enduro event featuring a $3,150 purse and a cool $1,000 going to the winner.
Once the soap and water was applied to 99s quarter-mile paved oval, the field started the first 125-laps in reverse direction with David Papst, Jr. of Stockton, the events defending champion, bursting from fifth to first on the opening lap. David Papst, Sr., also of Stockton, charged from even deeper in the field to the second position on lap-two.
Although the display of red and yellow flags are disdained for Enduros, a red came out on the 21st-pass when Stockton driver Sharon Riley got turned sideways just past the flagstand and was blasted head-on by Daniel Habenstrike, also of Stockton. On the 23rd circuit, the lead changed hands in favor of Wess Brown of Chico, who held strong to the 35th pass before giving it back to the younger Papst.
On the 85th lap, Bud Harris of Lodi got turned and stalled high on the track in turn three. Harris stayed safe to the 96th go-round until he was hit by another car and driven all the way around to the backchute. One lap later, Jim Bowerman of Stockton and Michael Doyle of Dixon took a hard side-by-side smash into the front wall. The lead changed hands for the final time in the first half of the event when Pete Anderson, Jr. of Stockton gained control and took the red halfway point flag.
Twenty-six of the original 30 starters took the second half green being run in the standard racing direction with Anderson in the lead over Papst, Jr., Rick Bentz of Lodi and Wess Brown. Anderson and Papst became the class of the show as they played bumper tag through lap 44 before Anderson did a solo 360 spin on the front straight, yet held onto the second slot and took off after the new leader Papst. Using slower traffic to his advantage, Anderson finally re-took the lead on the 72nd circuit. Eventually, the two lapped the field as they battled to lap-109 when Papst drew side by side with Anderson and the two ran in the same form for four straight laps until Anderson pulled another solo spin coming off turn-two. Anderson kept going, but the laps ran out with the final flag falling to what was thought to be the winner Papst, Jr. A final check by scoring, however, showed that Anderson was actually in front; and he received the winners trophy and $1,000. Papst picked up $500 for second with $400 going to Wess Brown for third.
The evenings program was completed with a "roll over" contest featuring Stockton drivers Jason Allen and Allen Rider, Jr. along with the husband and wife team of Jeremy and Stacie Hammon of Lockeford. Mrs. Hammon was an easy winner when she rolled her vehicle two complete turns; while none of the others gained more than a half turn
