Harry
and his wife Carol make their home in Modesto where
Harry owns and operates Everett’s Surplus Sales, working as a diesel mechanic.
His family includes his daughter Janna, and son’s Rick, Steve, and Jeff.
Harry’s racing career spans 33 years, starting
in the Early Model Stock
division in 1970 where he notched his first career
feature win on 4-16-72. The division was elevated to the current Late Model
status in 1973 with Harry taking his first feature win at that level on 7-14-74.
His 2002 championship marks his third career
crown, taking the title in 1995 and 1997, along with being awarded the
prestigious Sportsman of the Year award in 1981.
His Late Model career stats top the listings
in all but one area, with 70 fast times against the current record of 84 held by
Kenny Boyd. He has run off 106 heat wins, 64 dash wins, 74 main wins, and 268
main top five finishes. He now holds a record of 667 top finishes in all events
entered in
his 30-year Late Model run. His best years for feature wins came with
eight in 1989, six in 1996, and five each in 1986 & 2002. During his long career
he has 25 top ten season point finishes, and 6 in the top five bracket including
his three titles.
His 2002 season got off to a slow start as he
adjusted to the new form of car being used, but the later half became a study in
consistency as he reeled off a division best of 12 fast times. He won four heat
events, and went on to division leading stats
that included six dash wins, five
main wins, 18 main top five’s and 41 total top finishes, racing in all 21 nights
the division competed. Harry took the point lead on July 27th and mathematically
clinched on September 14th, just 21-days short of his 60th birthday. Harry also
finished second in the NASCAR Regional battle giving him an extra $23,000 plus
to add to the 2003 racing budget.
Harry credits his crew consisting of Crew Chief and son, Rick, Dan Shaal, Bob Weiss, Bud Huntley, Earl Ward, and Perry for their hard work and season long dedication to the racing team.
His 2002 sponsors consisted of ESCO, HOTWOOD,
Belletto Auto Glass, Panella Motor Sports, Pacific Pizza of Stockton, Bob’s Body
Shop of Stockton, American Powder Coating of Sacramento, Belletto Almonds, and
the Burns Family, owners of Perko’s Restaurants in Modesto, Manteca, Tracy, and
Riverbank.
Harry’s 2003 plans will bring him back for his 31st season of Late Model action and as many more wins as father time and "having Fun" will allow.
